Isolated aphasia: an uncommon complication of ovarian hyperstimulation therapy

Thromboembolic disease associated with assisted reproductive techniques is extremely rare. We present a previously healthy 30-year-old Estonian woman with primary infertility underwent an ovulation induction cycle with luteal long protocol. Seven days following oocyte retrieval, the patient complained of difficulty in speaking. On neurological examination, mild disorientation, motor aphasia, and very mild right-sided hypoestesia were noted. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed a injury to the left hemisphere language zone. Except for ovarian stimulation, no additional risk factors for stroke were shown. Following anticoagulation, the neurologic deficits recovered completely within few months, but aphasia remained stationary at this time in spite of speech therapy.
