Management of glottal insufficiency
Bhatt J. M., Verma S. P.
Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, University Voice and Swallowing Center, University of California at Irvine Medical Center, Irvine, CA, USA
The glottis, a component of the larynx, refers to the two vocal folds that are critical in sound production, airway protection and swallowing. Glottal insufficiency is a condition in which the vocal folds are unable to obtain complete closure, leading to a varying degree of dysphonia, dysphagia, and aspiration. This article reviews the presentation of glottic insufficiency, outlines its workup, and reviews the many management options available.
