The glottis, a component of the larynx, refers to the two vocal folds that are critical in sound production, airway protection and swallowing. Glottal insufficiency is a condition in which the vocal folds are unable to obtain complete closure, leading to a varying degree of dysphonia, dysphagia, and aspiration. This article reviews the presentation of glottic insufficiency, outlines its workup, and reviews the many management options available.
