Obstructive truncular venous malformations: a general overview

Byung-Boong LEE , James LAREDO

Department of Surgery, George Washington University, Washington DC, USA

PDF

Truncular venous malformation (VM) represents a group of anatomically anomalous veins, either internally or externally, as the outcome of an embryologically defective development during the vascular trunk formation period in the “later stage” of the embryogenesis. Hence, modified Hamburg Classification classified the VMs into two different types, based on this unique mesenchymal cell characteristics depending upon the embryological stage when the defective development occurred: the VM originated from the “early” stage of embryogenesis to “extratruncular” type while the VM lesions originated from the “late” stage of embryogenesis to “truncular” type.
