Prevalence of incidental celiac artery compression caused by median arcuate ligament among patients with peripheral arterial disease

BACKGROUND: Celiac artery compression syndrome is a rare disease occurring in 0.4% of the population. Celiac artery compression occurs in 2.4-8% of the population. The aim of this study is to examine the prevalence of celiac artery compression in CT-angiogram (CTA) done for patients who had peripheral arterial disease in our tertiary care King Abdullah University Hospital located in the Northern part of Jordan.
METHODS: Abdomen and runoff CTA of patients complaining of peripheral arterial disease were reviewed retrospectively between January 2013 and January 2016 at King Abdullah University Hospital. Patients with chronic non-specific abdominal pain were excluded from the study. All celiac trunks on CTA with typical signs of celiac artery compression were considered positive.
RESULTS: A total number of 204 patients with a mean age of 66.5 years had abdominal and runoff CTA. Incidental findings suggestive of asymptomatic celiac artery compression were detected in 8 patients (4%) of which 6 (3%) were males and 2 (1%) were females.
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of asymptomatic celiac artery compression in patients with peripheral arterial disease at King Abdullah University Hospital is comparable to that of general population.
