The role of drug-eluting balloons for the in-stent restenosis in femoro-popliteal interventions
Cannavale A., Krokidis M.
Department of Radiology, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, Cambridge, UK
In-stent restenosis (ISR) remains one of the main drawbacks of stenting the femoropopliteal segment, and leads to stent dysfunction and repeated interventions. A variety of endovascular techniques have been investigated so far to reduce this phenomenon, including plain angioplasty, atherectomy, new stent deployment, cutting balloons and cryoplasty but without satisfactory mid- and long-term results.
Drug eluting balloons (DEBs) are recently developed and have shown promising results in the treatment of native femoropopliteal disease; the use of these novel devices has extended in the treatment of ISR. The main advantage of DEBs in the treatment of ISR is the reduction of the chronic inflammatory factors. Purpose of this review is to delineate the role of DEBs in the treatment of ISR of the femoropopliteal arteries.
