Fibrin glue injection for treatment of femoral pseudoaneurysms
Amatucci G., Zerbino M., Mottola G., Del Mastro G.
Unit of Vascular Surgery San Giuseppe Moscati Hospital, Avellino, Italy
Aim. Thrombin injection in femoral pseudoaneurysms has been suggest to be less invasive than surgical treatment, and superior to US-guided compression.
Methods. We reviewed all femoral artery pseudoaneurysms (196) diagnosed at our department from January 2001 to December 2005. Forty-nine (25%) patients had a surgical treatment;118 (60%) the injection of fibrin glue, the remaining 29 cases (15%) had US compression.
Results. All cases had positive result at the end. All patients were submitted to clinical and ultrasound follow-up at 24 h,1 week, and 6 months, both at our vascular surgery and cardiological consulting. No complications occurred. No recurrences were found at follow-up.
Conclusion. When the compression therapy after invasive cardiovascular procedures failed , the pseudoaneurysm must be treated, and US-guided thrombin injection is an effective treatment for occlusion of pseudoaneurysms;while surgical therapy is reserved to selected cases.
