Axillary nerve schwannoma at the quadrilateral space of Velpeau

Stefano FERRARESI , Elisabetta BASSO, Lorenzo MAISTRELLO

Department of Neurosurgery, Santa Maria della Misericordia Hospital, Rovigo, Italy

The authors present a very rare localization of an axillary nerve schwannoma, which arose posteriorly in the quadrilateral space. The patient only complained of vague disturbances in the shoulder area and the MRI beautifully demonstrates the pathology including a detailed anatomy of the quadrilateral space. During the surgery, the tumor was completely removed without consequences. The case deserves mention for its extreme rarity (1 out of more than 700 operated schwannomas in our series and only one reported case in the ongoing literature) and for the remarkable images we obtained.
