The initial spectrum of ICU patients involving multiple body systems is often incredibly varied and the imaging findings requires a clear understanding of the mechanism of injury to identify which areas to scrutinize in detail. Despite the concern of hazards associated with the widespread use of ionizing radiations in healthcare, the chest X-ray remains the most prevalent imaging examination. The radiologist is expected to be able to distinguish routine postoperative radiographic alterations from signs of clinically significant complications after cardiac surgery. Therefore, the role of the radiologist also consists in assessing the position of the various monitoring and life-sustaining tubes, lines, and catheters with the common imaging techniques and detect complications related to the use of such life-sustaining devices. Non-invasive cardiac imaging, such as computer tomography (CT) with or without contrast (including CT angiography), bedside ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, whose application is excluded in a few selected cases, is increasingly being used in clinical practice. In this review article, we will provide information and recommendations based on current guidelines for routinely cardiac device-encountered in clinical practice with which radiologists are required to be familiar with the normal postoperative imaging findings.
