BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of computed tomography (CT) to diagnose gastric cancer, in patients come to our observation with non-specific clinical question and then to a locoregional and at a distance staging of disease identified.
METHODS: We reviewed retrospectively, to this end, 927 abdomen/pelvis CTs, all performed with nonspecific clinical question (abdominal pain, weight loss, vomit, dyspepsia).
RESULTS: We identified 38 cases with gastric parietal thickening suspect. In 34 cases the gastric cavity was contextually distended with water and then reduced parietal tone.
CONCLUSIONS: The current technological developments of CT equipment have improved diagnostic accuracy of multiple detector CT for the detection and the pre-chirurgical staging of gastric cancer. Accurate preoperative staging is also important for therapeutic treatment planning. Hydrodistension and reduction of the parietal tone were allowed to have an accurate assessment of the gastric wall thickness in order to improve the detection and the staging of gastric cancer.
