Newborn hearing screening with TEOAE: our experience on 4759 infants

AIM: The early diagnosis of a hearing loss (HL) in newborns and the identification of risk factors for late-onset HL are a matter of fundamental importance to assess a therapeutic program to reach adequate linguistic competences and to avoid negative patterns of cognitive development.
METHODS: At the present time, newborn screening with transient evoked otoacustic emissions (TEOAE) is mandatory in birth centers of some Italian regions with the purpose to extend the screening all over the national territory.
RESULTS: A first-level screening is not sufficient on its own. All refer newborns from this screening must be tested with auditory brainstem responses (ABR) or automatic ABR (A-ABR) to ensure the achievement of a complete audiological diagnosis.
CONCLUSION: This paper gives an overview of the experience carried out at the ”Città di Roma” birth center from December 2007 to June 2012 on 4759 infants.
