Dosimetry of pediatric nuclear medicine procedures

Background. Radiation ­dose esti­mates for chil­dren of dif­fer­ent ­ages for ­many dif­fer­ent nucle­ar med­i­cine pro­ce­dures are pre­sent­ed.
Methods. Using stan­dard ­MIRD meth­o­dol­o­gy, radi­a­tion ­dose cal­cu­la­tions ­were per­formed for a broad ­range of radio­phar­ma­ceu­ti­cal ­agents com­mon­ly ­used in ped­i­at­ric nucle­ar med­i­cine. Results ­from the ­best avail­able bio­ki­net­ic mod­els ­were ­used in the Mirdose 3.1 com­put­er pro­gram to ­obtain ­dose esti­mates per ­unit admin­is­tered activ­ity for the pro­ce­dures. Then, assuming typ­i­cal val­ues of admin­is­tered activ­ity ­based on ­body ­weight, the ­dose per pro­ce­dure for ­many tar­get ­organs of inter­est was cal­cu­lat­ed and pre­sent­ed in tab­u­lar ­form. The effec­tive ­dose equiv­a­lent (­ICRP 30) and effec­tive ­dose (­ICRP 60) are ­also giv­en.
Results and con­clu­sions. The ­results are pre­sent­ed in mul­ti­ple ­tables attached to the ­text of the arti­cle. The infor­ma­tion ­should be ­quite use­ful in eval­u­at­ing radi­a­tion dos­es for ­many pedi­at­ric nucle­ar med­i­cine pro­ce­dures, ­using the ­best avail­able mod­els and meth­ods.
