Bronchial thermoplasty. A new and novel procedure for patients with asthma: a short history, a bright future
Miller J. D.
Unit of Thoracic Surgery McMaster University Hamilton, ON, Canada
Asthma is a common respiratory ailment which affects 10% of men and women by age 60. Despite having several medical options available to treat asthma, there is no procedure or operation that can permanently help patients with his chronic disease. In 1994 efforts began to develop such a procedure. Investigators began with the belief that by reducing or interrupting airway smooth muscle (ASM) bronchoconstriction mightin turn be reduced, and result, improved pulmonary function and improved quality of life for patients with asthma. This is a review of the history and development of this technology now known as bronchial thermoplasty. The review includes early animal work, feasibility studies, and recent studies addressing safety and efficacy.
