There is an increasing awareness that substance use disorders (SUD) frequently occur with eating disorders (ED). An overall summary of the literature is provided, followed by a review of the empirical literature on the comorbidity between ED and SUD in adolescents from studies published between January 1980 and January 2010. Methodological issues and theoretical models for understanding this co-occurrence are discussed. The conceptualization of the relations and interactions of the major factors influencing the development of ED and the contributing factors to the comorbidity between ED and SUD are also presented.
