Handicap, life quality and scholar integration: a research in Turin
Giraudo R., Sabbatini O.
Aim. The aim of this paper is to describe and value the scholar integration of mental disabled people in secondary schools. It is proposed as a contribution to understand the difficulties about the scholar integration of the disabled people and as a synthesis giving the possibility to observe the Turin reality on handicap problems.
Methods. The research was carried out by means of a questionnaire and an attachment, both nameless, including 41 questions about: scholar experience, integration, function of teachers. There is also a list of questions concerning private items about: family, management of commonness, kind of diagnosis and medical treatments proposed by doctors, possible aids that the family has got. The questionnaire was filled in by 79 persons, members of 2 Turin associations: ANFFAS and CEPIM.
Results. A positive result of school integration of disabled people is observed, particularly due to the valid professional work of teachers who help them to socialize and to get a quite good school preparation. Parents are the most important source of friendships, particularly fathers, followed by mothers and brothers.
Conclusion. Therefore, it is possible to confirm that school integration is very important to improve the quality of life of disabled people, even if the family has the fundamental role for interpersonal relations.
