Autologous adipose tissue enriched in stromal vascular fraction in knee osteoarthritis

Virginia PRIANO, Ferdinando PRIANO

Clinica Montallegro, Genoa, Italy

BACKGROUND: Current therapies used in symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) are effective in relieving symptoms but cannot modify the disease. Recently, a novel one-step, enzyme-free SVF adipose tissue-enrichment system (Hy-tissue SVF) has been placed into the market. The aim of this retrospective study is to assess if a single injection of adipose tissue enriched in stromal vascular fraction (at-SVF) via this one-step enzyme free protocol, is effective and safe in managing knee OA symptoms.
METHODS: Twenty-five patients, aged 40-85 years and with a diagnosis of knee OA Kellgren-Lawrence grade II-III, have been treated with a single intra-articular at-SVF dose (8-10 ml) and followed up for 1, 3 and 6 months. Treatment efficacy has been measured using the Western Ontario and Mc Master University (WOMAC) questionnaire.
RESULTS: The evaluation of pain, stiffness and physical function demonstrated a significant improvement in the short-term that persisted until the end of the follow-up visit at 6 months. The WOMAC total score suggested the same trend of improvement during the whole period of observation.
CONCLUSIONS: A single intra-articular injection of autologous at-SVF is successful in relieving pain and improving both knee stiffness and physical function in a well-tolerated and safe manner. The effects of a single intra-articular injection of at-SVF are appreciable in the short-term but also, most important, in the medium-term thus possibly enhancing the quality of life of the patients.
