A Trabecular Titanium™ cup for total hip arthroplasty: a preliminary clinical and radiographic report

AIM: Trabecular TitaniumTM is a highly porous biomaterial, with a regular three-dimensional hexagonal cell structure imitating the morphology of the trabecular bone. Aim of this prospective study was to assess short-term clinical and radiographic outcomes with a Trabecular TitaniumTM cup for total hip arthroplasty (THA).
METHODS: Between December 2007 and January 2011, 94 unselected consecutive patients (103 hips) underwent primary THA with a press-fit cementless DELTA-TT cup (Lima Corporate, Villanova di San Daniele del Friuli, Udine, Italy). Mean age was 66.8±14.1 (37-85) years. Underlying pathology was primary osteoarthritis in 88 cases (85.4%), hip dysplasia in 10 (9.7%), osteonecrosis of the femoral head in 4 (3.9%) and rheumatoid arthritis in 1 (1%). Clinical and radiographic evaluations were performed in the preoperative phase, and postoperatively, at 3, 6, 12 months, and then annually thereafter.
RESULTS: Average follow-up was 35.4±4.2 (28-41) months. Mean total Harris Hip Score improved considerably from 53.9±7.5, before surgery, to 93.1±7.8 at the last follow-up. A significant improvement was observed in terms of functional recovery and pain relief: all patients regained a normal lifestyle without limitations. From radiographic assessment, acetabular cups showed signs of osseointegration without osteolysis or progressive radiolucent lines. Kaplan-Meier cumulative survivorship was 99.08%: only one revision (0.9%) due to aseptic loosening was recorded after 11 months.
CONCLUSION: DELTA-TT cups showed promising short-term clinical and radiographic results, ensuring an effective primary fixation and osseointegration.
