Aim. This study aimed to evaluate the potential effects of fondaparinux, a synthetic anticoagulant substance similar to heparin, on the healing of a closed rat tibia fracture model.
Methods. Forty-eight male Wistar rats were randomized into two groups (fondaparinux and control group, N.=24 for each). A closed, mid-diaphyseal transverse fracture was created in the left tibiae of rats after insertion of a 0.8-mm K wire into the medullary canal following deep anesthesia with ketamine 0.03 mg/kg. Fondaparinux was injected to animals daily in fondaparinux group subcutaneously starting from 6 hours after surgery in accordance with the guidelines. Fracture healing was assessed through radiological, histopathological and biomechanical methods at 2, 4 and, 6 weeks.
Results. Low molecular-weight heparines are accepted to exert delay on fracture healing. In our study, we did not observe any delay on fracture healing with fondaparinux. No significant differences were found between the groups regarding the progression of fracture union in weekly comparison (P>0.05).
Conclusion. Fondaparinux can be used for patients with long bone fractures to prevent thromboemboly with sure touch about no delaying effect on fracture healing.
