Full thickness, focal articular cartilage loss in the knee is one of the most challenging problems in all of orthopedic surgery. Trying to decide which defects require treatment and what type of treatment should be rendered is often a challenging problem. This review will focus on the indications, surgical techniques, results and complications of marrow stimulation, osteochondral autografts and allografts, chondrocyte transplantation and bone/tissue scaffold grafts.
