AIM: The purpose of our study is to evaluate the medium-long term functional outcome of a population of bikers, which had their pelvis disrupted in a motorcycle accident. These patients are young and devoid of any osteo-muscular pathology before the trauma. The correlations between the functional score and the follow-up time and between urologic score and sexual score was analyzed. The second part of the study compares the outcome of our population with the outcome in literature.
METHODS: This retrospective study is based on 32 victims of motorcycle accidents and with pelvic fractures, treated from 2004 to 2008 at AO C.T.O./Maria Adelaide, Turin, Italy and AOU S. Luigi Gonzaga, Orbassano, Turin, Italy. The mean age of the population is 38 years. We measured the outcome with two functional evaluation, the first one after 1 year on average, the second one after 2 years on average, using two functional evaluation scores: Gallo and Majeed Evaluation Scores.
RESULTS: We found a strong correlation between the follow-up time and the improvement of the functional outcome in global and osteo-muscular evaluation; also the sexual sphere improves. The urologic condition indeed is stable. There is a strong direct correlation between the sexual score and the urologic score. Globally, the functional results of this population turned out to be similar to those which can be found in literature.
CONCLUSION: Pelvic fractures often affect young people and frequently cause a quality of life worse than before the trauma: the prevention of these severe accidents should be improved
