Functional and radiologic results in patients with bone and soft tissue tumors treated with bank musculoskeletal tissue

Aim. Bank Musculoskeletal tissues (MST) are essential for reconstruction after oncologic resection. While functional results are based on standardised scale, radiographic data are analysed by different score. Aim of the study was to make a functional and radiologic evaluation of patients with bone and soft tissue tumors treated with MST in a Italian regional reference centre.
Methods. From january 2001 to february 2005, 36 patiens with bone tumors (Group 1) and 3 with soft tissue sarcoma (Group 2) were treated with structural allografts in 9 cases and with filling grafts in 30 cases in the Centro di Chirurgia Ortopedica Oncologica e Ricostrut-tiva, ASO CTO, CRF, MA, Turin. Complications, functional results based on Mankin score and radiographic results based on an original scale were evaluated.
Results. Group 1: 2 graft site infection, 4 recurrences; satisfactory functional result in 72.2%; positive radiographic result with total or partial integration in 69.4% of patients. Group 2: 2 recurrences; satisfactory functional result and positive radiographic result in 33.3% of pa-tients.
Conclusion. Diagnosis influences functional result more than radiologic one; there are few differences between structural and cancellous graft results; complications influence radiologic result more than functional one. Prelimi-nar data agree with letterature ones. This study is a preliminary report and should be extended to a more numerous sample of patients and for a longer observation time.
