Two stage exchange revision for treatment of infected total knee arthroplasty

Deep infection is an infrequent complication of total knee arthroplasty (TKA); however, it is associated with significant morbidity and the potential for compromise of long-term outcome. Evaluation and diagnosis have been well established in the literature. There are several management options available, however, two stage revision using a antibiotic spacer between stages is the most reliable means by which to eradicate infection and maximize long-term function. The purpose of this review is to describe the principles and results of two stage revision of the infected TKA.
