The functional purpose of knee osteotomy is described in brief. Varus-valgus axial alignment deformities involve the risk of arthritic degeneration (varus or valgus arthritic knee) while an arthritic knee can subsequently become varus or valgus (arthritic varus or valgus knee).
Surgical techniques used, from Jackson and Coventry to the present day, have been innumerable. For the past 2 years we have been using the Puddu-Fowler technique with excellent results. The need for a very precise indication is underlined. Technical details and possible complications are also described.
