The complexity of tibiotarsal fractures has led to the creation of various fracture classification systems that offer guidance to their treatment and prognosis. The many different names assigned to these fractures bears witness to how difficult they are to classify. From Destot's historical ''pilon tibiale'' to the now universally accepted AO classification, none has yet been found to cover all the variants.
