Benign bone tumors of the rear foot

Bone tumors of the rear foot are a rare pathology corresponding to 5% of the localizations in the whole skeletal bones and are less frequent than soft tissue tumors with a 1:10 ratio. The benign form of the rear foot is the most part of bone tumors and its histological type is similar to the rest of the skeleton. Cases observed over a period of 9 years (from 1991 to 1999) concerning 10 sites of the rear foot in 49 neoplastic forms found in the foot are reported. For each histological type a description is given of the general characteristics, and of the peculiarity at foot level, and the clinical, radiological, anatomo-pathological findings of the most interesting cases are reported. Radiological signs and differential diagnosis are underlined. Particular attention is given to osteoid osteoma localised in the rear foot since the correct diagnosis is obtained after a long period from the onset of the first symptoms due to the few and aspecific radiologic signs. The treatment of choice is surgical resection of the cystic cavity or total resection in order to avoid recurrences and trying to maintain as much as possible the rear foot morphology and weight-bearing function.
