Midtarsal joint fractures. Complications and treatment
Araldi M., Lameri A., Lodigiani S., Tango A.
After a short survey of the anatomy and physiology of the midtarsal joint, a list is made of the common complications and unfavourable outcomes of these skeletal lesions; a division is also made between internal factors of this structure and occasional external factors mainly linked to mistakes and omissions in the diagnostic and therapeutic process. Personal experience over a ten years' period at the Civil Hospital of Crema is reexamined and compared with the literature data. Some general rules are then suggested in order to eliminate possible mistakes in the diagnosis of skeletal and vascular lesions, particularly ischemic and compartmental syndromes. Some treatments of invalidating outcomes are suggested, such as surgical programs aiming at the suppression of pain and also to maintaing the function considering the physiology of the whole organ. Personal opinion is then summarised in five points.
