Age-related macular degeneration: laboratory models

Gariano R. F.

PDF

Experimental approaches to age-related macular degeneration typically evaluate only selected features of the human disease. Animal models that encompass both atrophic and exudative aspects of retinal degenerations are required to better understand disease progression and to predict and assess potential therapies. New laboratory systems are emerging from recent insights into the pathogenesis of macular degeneration, combined with new tools from molecular biology and rapid screening techniques.
