Usefulness of low vision aids in ocular diseases

A study of 387 low vision patients (179 males, 208 females), 4-81 years old, admitted to the Low Vision Center (Eye Clinic of Siena) in the years 1988-1993, with a follow-up of 12 months has been carried out. Visual acuity in the better eye ranged between 1/50 and 2/10. Main causes of low vision were macular degenerations diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma. Low vision aids were prescribed in 231 cases; after a follow-up of 12 months 171 patients (74,0%) used regularly their aids. Rehabilitation results are related to age, visual acuity, number of training sessions in the use of low vison aids.
