Differential diagnosis in vulvar hematoma: sexual assault is not the only explanation. The importance of medico-legal evaluation in an unusual case report

M. Cristina DAVOLIO, Eleonora TORE , Sabino PELOSI

Department of Legal Medicine and Risk Management, AUSL Modena, Modena, Italy

We present the case of a 23-year-old woman who was admitted to the local hospital because of a vulvar hematoma. The suspect of a group sexual assault and personal injury was reported to the judicial authorities and the patient was transferred to the Gynecologic Surgical Department. The medico-legal evaluation revealed that the vulvar hematoma was the consequence of a trauma not consistent with sexual abuse. The examination of patients who have possibly suffered sexual abuse should be performed by a specialist in legal medicine together with a gynecologist or a pediatric surgeon.
