Learning disabilities in minors: medico-legal considerations on status quaestionis in Italy
Gennari P. 1, Vitiello G. 2
1 Medico specializzando in Medicina Legale, Università degli Studi di Torino; 2 Coordinatore medico legale regionale, INPS del Piemonte
The purpose of this paper was to provide an overview on how children with a specific learning disorder are currently protected in our country, from the social care and legislative perspective, with particular regard to the specialist in Legal Medicine’s role. Currently, specific learning disabilities have a prevalence ranging between 2.5% and 3.5% of childhood population for the Italian language, with important consequences at individual level: lowering the level of education attained, frequent dropouts during secondary school, reduction of the social and working potential of the individual.
