Poisoning in the forensic sector of Pisa during the period 1994-1998

Giusiani M., Bisordi N.

PDF

The authors report the statistical data for episodes of poisoning reported to the Pisa department of forensic medicine during the period 1994-1998 in relation to the total request for toxicological tests, including those not correlated to the cause of death, the nature of the substance leading to death by intoxication, methods of damage and age groups. By comparing the results of the statistical analysis of these data with those from earlier series published by the same authors, the latter highlight the escalation of deaths caused by drug intoxication which have risen from 28% of total deaths from poisoning in 1974-83 to 79% for the present period. Moreover, by analysing these cases in relation to age groups, the results show a trend towards older age groups, including the 50-59 year-old-group.
