Background. The authors examined the lesions and relative functional consequences reported in 120 ankle injuries referred during the period between 1991 and 2000 to the outpatients clinic at the ''Cesare Gerin'' Institute of Legal Medicine and Insurance at the University of Rome ''La Sapienza''.
Methods. A total of 72 males and 48 females were enrolled in the study out of an out-patient population of 4045 individuals. They were divided into 10 age brackets, also taking into account their residence, job, the place and circumstances of the accident, the type of injury sustained, the outcome and relative medicolegal evaluation.
Results. The results of the tests showed that ankle injuries were most frequent in males aged between 20 and 30 years old. The most frequent place were injury occurred ‹ an accidental fall ‹ was in the street. The type of injury took the form of contusion of the right ankle with bone fracture. Slight functional limitation was the most frequent outcome of injury.
Conclusion. The study showed that although there is often no parallel association between the initial fractures and the extent of permanent invalidity, two standard parameters can be used to define this type of disability with considerable precision.
