Enzyme encapsulation for biocatalysis in organic solvents. New approaches to the stereoselective synthesis of pharmaceutical compounds
Ansorge-Schumacher M. B., Doumèche B., Metrangelo D., Hartmeier W.
Department of Biotechnology, Technical University of Aachen (RWTH), Aachen, Germany
The encapsulation of biocatalysts in natural or synthetic hydrogels is a versatile tool to apply enzymes to synthesis in organic solvents. Thus, even sensible or cofactor-dependent catalysts like alcohol dehydrogenases are protected from detrimental environmental effects and might be employed to produce single-enantiomer drugs, insoluble in aqueous solutions.
