The encapsulation of biocatalysts in natural or synthetic hydrogels is a versatile tool to apply enzymes to synthesis in organic solvents. Thus, even sensible or cofactor-dependent catalysts like alcohol dehydrogenases are protected from detrimental environmental effects and might be employed to produce single-enantiomer drugs, insoluble in aqueous solutions.
