Entrapment of ­cells with­in ­spheres ­based on cal­cium algi­nate ­gels has ­become the ­most wide­ly ­used tech­nique for immo­bi­liz­ing liv­ing ­cells. The ­present ­paper eval­u­ates the poten­tial of ­this mate­ri­al ­based on the cur­rent knowl­edge ­about struc­tu­ral and func­tion­al rela­tion­ships in algi­nate ­gels.
