Cell sorting using flow cytometry. Old instruments for new applications
Melioli G., Pasquetti W., Verlino C., Semino C.
Citometry Unit, Advanced Biotechnology Center, National Institute for Cancer Research, Genova, Italy
The use of flow cytometry and cell sorting started in research and clinical investigation laboratories in 1980. At present, cell sorting has a number of classic indications, in particular in the field of immunology and hematology. In addition, new applications, in the field of biotechnology (such as purification of extremely rare populations as well as multi-parametric separation on the basis of both physical and phenotypic parameters) have been developed recently. The technical approach for these new sorting strategies is crucial in order to obtain reliable and reproducible results.
