In primary open-angle glaucoma retinal ganglion cells (RGC) are affected by mechanisms of cell death similar to those of Alzheimer’s disease, the main of which is represented by apoptosis (programmed cell death). In this review we will analyze the mechanisms that trigger the apoptotic cascade in glaucoma, the therapies that have shown a neuroprotective effect in glaucoma, and the ability to diagnose early-stage disease using new imaging techniques.
