Treatment of past-lasik lacrimal dysfunction syndrome: preliminar studies on postoperative activity of a dietary supplement

AIM: To investigate the ability of a capsule supplement (Lacrisek) containing omega-3, lipoic acid and fenugreek to prevent and treat lacrimal dysfunctions post Lasik.
METHODS: Sixty (60) patients were divided in 2 groups, one treated once a day with 1 capsule of Lacrisek (A) and one control (B). Measurements of the cornea sensitivity by Cochet-Bonnet aesthesiometer and signs of lacrimal dysfunction such as burning, persistent dryness, itching, and foreign body sensation were taken prior surgery (T0) and once a month for 6 months (T1-T6).
RESULTS: Recovery of corneal sensitivity was significantly faster for the group treated with Lacrisek capsules, compared with the control group. This result was supported by the analysis of the signs of lacrimal dysfunction and from the aesthesiometer data.
CONCLUSION: The use of Lacrisek capsules could be a useful therapeutic approach to prevent and treat lacrimal dysfunctions post lasik.
