Refractive surgery comprises various different corneal intervention techniques that correct refractive errors due to a focusing defect of images on the retina. Categorized as ametropias, the most common are myopia, hypermetropia, and astigmatism. An established method for correction of ametropia in adults, refractive surgery in children and adolescents is attracting increasing attention from ophthalmologists and pediatricians. Articles and reviews published over the past decade have illustrated the advances in refractive surgery in pediatric patients. This article presents a review of the literature and highlights the current status of evidence regarding refractive surgery in this patient subgroup.
