Aim. This study describes the pathogenesis of orbital retinoblastoma, its treatment and prognosis.
Methods. Medical records were reviewed of 330 cases of retinoblastoma treated between 1980 and 2006 at our institute, 6 of which were orbital retinoblastoma.
Results. Survival after diagnosis of orbital retinoblastoma was found to depend on the presence or absence of metastases to the central nervous system and/or distant metastasis.
Conclusion. Isolated orbital retinoblastoma carries a good prognosis when promptly diagnosed and treated. When associated with distant metastasis and/or involvement of the central nervous system, prognosis is poor.
