Uveitis: an epidemiological study of Turin
Rolle T., Actis A. G., Machetta F., Grignolo F. M.
Dipartimento di Fisiopatologia Clinica Sezione di Oftalmologia Università di Torino, Torino
Inflammation of the uveal tract or uveitis is a comprehensive term which includes inflammation of the iris, ciliary body and choroids, and usually of the corneal endothelium. Some types of uveitis (for example Behcet syndrome, hystoplasmosis, toxoplasmosis...) are typical of specifical geographical areas. Epidemiological studies are the cornerstone of successful diagnosis and treatment. This study includes all the patients suffering from uveitis and admitted to the University Eye Clinic of the Ophthalmic Hospital of Turin from January 1998 to June 2004. We examinated 215 case-sheets: 114 males and 101 females. Uveitis has been diagnosed with a thorough examination of the eye with a slit lamp microscope and ophthalmoscopy. We evaluated also visual acuity and intraocular pressure. In some cases, we required blood work and others tests to rule out underlying systemic disease or infection. We decided to classify uveitis following the classification of the International Uveitis Study Group. All the results of the study are in the article.
