Scientific societies and COVID-19
Piero CAPPELLETTI ✉
COVID-19 highlighted the crisis of the Medical Scientific Societies, already present in the early 2000s, both in terms of scientific networking and in terms of advocacy. New virtual ways of “staying together” and of transferring research results are imaginable. Advocacy requires rethinking the disciplinary perimeter, independence from industry and politics, compliance with codes of conduct, mental openness to new clinical and organizational contents. The harmony between leaders and members of the Medical Scientific Societies, the transparency and democratic participation, the accountability of people and actions and, on the other hand, the involvement of competences, generational turnover, the ability to ride technological innovation, are critical success factors.
