Effect of mobile use on static postural stability

BACKGROUND: Using mobile phone while doing other motor or cognitive activities is a common occurrence in everyday activity and indirectly influence the modulation of the postural stability. This study aimed is to investigate effect of mobile use activity effect on static postural stability (PS) in healthy adults.
METHODS: A fifty gender-balanced group of healthy adults (age: 20.9±1.7; height: 174.7±0.1 cm; body mass: 69.3±12.8 kg) were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Static postural stability in parallel stance was assessed by measuring the displacement of center of pressure (COP) on footplate while texting a message and without mobile phone use.
RESULTS: Paired t-test showed that COP parameters increased significantly in texting message conditions in total distance COP (P=0.01), left leg COP (P=0.00), medial lateral oscillation (P=0.00). Trajectory of COP did not significantly differ in right leg (P=0.116) and anterior-posterior oscillation (P=0.82) between two conditions.
CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrated that texting on mobile phone can disturb postural stability during quite stance in young university athletes, and that can be explained by directing attention on texting task.
