Effect of short-exposure cold water immersion on mechanical and metabolic muscles variables in postexercise short-term recovery

BACKGROUND: The effect of cryotherapy on neuromuscular function is not consensual, although it is popular in sports contexts as recuperative strategy postexercise. The propose of this study was to verify the effects of short-exposure cold water immersion (CWI) aiming superficial neuromuscular cooling on mechanical and metabolic muscles variables in postexercise short-term recovery.
METHODS: Male volleyball athletes (N.=12; age 15±1.08 years; stature: 174±5.50 cm; body mass: 70.75±15.76 kg) took part in this study. The assessment procedures had happened on two different days. The mechanical and metabolic muscles variables assessed were the average mechanical power (W) and the Fatigue Index (FI), respectively. The procedures protocol had the same structure in both days, except that in the first day we used a seated rest as a control condition (CC) and in the second day we used a six minutes CWI as the experimental condition (EC). The W and the FI were determined by 60 s of the continuous vertical jump (CVJT60) test. The protocol procedures followed an order of the steps that immediately following each other: 1º) CVJT60 at the moment PRE; 2º) six minute of seated rest on CC or six minutes CWI on EC; 3º) five minutes of seated rest; 4º) CVJT60 again, in the moment POST. For the CWI, participants entered, up to waist height, in a tank of 2000 l capacity filled with ice water at 16 °C. The statistical test used was the Generalized Linear Model (GLzM).
RESULTS: As results, there were no statistical differences for W and FI when we analyzed the condition, moment or the interaction between condition and moment.
CONCLUSIONS: Short-exposure CWI aiming superficial neuromuscular cooling did not affect mechanical and metabolic muscles variables in postexercise short-term recovery.
