Analysis of muscle recovery time after acute stretching at peak torque of the hamstring muscles

BACKGROUND: The benefit of static stretching (SS) to the performance of athletes is currently being questioned. Negative effects such as the reduction of the peak torque (Pt) are identified immediately after performing SS. However, it is not clear what the duration of this negative effect is. This study evaluated different time intervals of recovery from loss of Pt and peak torque reduction percentage (%RPt) after acute static stretching.
METHODS: The study included 21 students divided into two groups according to sex: the male group (MG; N.=11); and the female group (FG; N.=10). Pt of hamstrings was analyzed before and after static stretching, following four different recovery protocols: no recovery interval (A1); muscle rest for 1 minute (A2); muscle rest for 3 minutes (A3); and after performing five minutes of low intensity running (A4).
RESULTS: There was a reduction in Pt after static stretching in both groups of the A1 protocol (MG; P<0.001; f2=0,94); (FG: P<0.001; f2=0.96) and A2 (MG: P=0.005; f2=0.93); (FG: P=0.006; f2=0.96). The % RPt showed reduction MG in the A1 protocol when compared to the protocols: A4 (P<0.01; f2=2.14) and A3 (P=0.002; f2=1.88); and FG when compared to only the A4 protocol (P=0.027; f2=1.88).
CONCLUSIONS: This study concluded that three minutes of muscle recovery produced a significant recovery of Pt in the hamstring after performing acute stretching exercises. However, complete muscle recovery was considered after 5 minutes of warming exercises carried out at low intensity.
