Osteomyelitis refers to an inflammatory condition of bone, which includes the medullary cavity, the haversian systems and the adjacent cortex. Although it has numerous etiological factors such as traumatic injuries, radiation, and certain chemical substances, osteomyelitis is commonly used to describe the inflammation of medullary space caused by a true infection of the bone induced by pyogenic microorganisms. The most common organism responsible for this pathology is found to be Staphylococcus aureus in all types of cases and age groups invariably. Postpartum osteomyelitis is a very rare phenomenon which has been reported to be limited to adjacent anatomic structures such as pelvis or vertebrae. Detailed analysis of literature revealed that there is not a single case of postpartum osteomyelitis of mandible that has been reported till date. The purpose of this article is to report for the first time, a case of post-partum osteomyelitis of mandible caused by Escherichia coli.
