BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess operating time for the adaptation and placement of plate in both study groups, to compare postoperative reduction of fracture in between both study groups and to compare postoperative complications in between both study groups.
METHODS: Patients were randomly assigned to receive a 2.0-mm locking plate (group A, N.=10) and 2.0-mm non locking plate (group B, N.=10). All patients were followed up for 3 months postoperatively.
RESULTS: Statistical analysis using independent sample t test showed significant difference of working time in between two groups and it was found that Group B Non-Locking plates required significantly more time than locking plates [t(18) =13.572, P<0.001]. A statistical significant difference was not found in the clinical parameters such as infection, occlusal disturbance, wound dehiscence, mobility of segment, paresthesia.
CONCLUSIONS: In our study, we have made an attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of two plating systems in treatment of mandibular fractures. It is observed in our study that the locking plate system offers significant advantages over the non-locking plate system. It was found that less precision was required in plate adaptation when using locking plate system.
