Myoepithelial carcinoma of the palate: a case report of a rare lesion

A case of myoepithelial carcinoma in a 65-year-old woman is described. Myoepithelial carcinoma is a very rare malignancy, usually found in the parotid gland. The incidence of this lesion intraorally is extremely rare, with only 50 recorded instances found involving the minor salivary glands. The patient presented with a one-year history of a firm, painless swelling of the hard palate. An incisional biopsy was taken two weeks before the patient was seen at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals and was diagnosed as myoepithelioma. After resection of the lesion, histological study showed invasion and atypia of the glandular acina by myoepithelial cells, consistent with myoepithelial carcinoma. Metastatic workup was negative, and there is no evidence of recurrence six years following resection.
