Back pain as the first manifestation of gastric cancer
Rita SILVA ✉, Andreia DIEGUES, Ana R. LOPES, Filipa RODRIGUES, Elisa TOMÉ
Department of Internal Medicine, ULS Nordeste, Bragança, Portugal
The authors describe the case of a 57-year-old woman who presented with severe back pain due to a lytic lesion in a lumbar vertebra. The biopsy revealed a metastasis of the carcinoma and the additional study led to the diagnosis of poorly differentiated gastric cancer; the patient died a few weeks later. The presentation of gastric cancer as bone metastasis is rare, especially with no other associated symptoms, and the prognosis of these patients is very poor.
