BACKGROUND: The function of estrogen is mainly mediated through specific intracellular estrogen receptors (ER) where those are the members of the super family of transcription factors that are activated by ligands expressed in the target tissue. This study aimed to determine the role of estrogen alpha (ERα) and estrogen beta (ERβ) receptor mRNA and serum protein levels with the risk of pelvic organ prolapse.
METHODS: This type of research is quantitative research using the case control design which is an observational analytic study that examines the relationship between effects on certain factors. This research was carried out in several education hospitals in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the medical faculty of Hasanuddin University in Makassar, South Sulawesi province.
RESULTS: This research resulted that age as a risk factor showed a significant association with ER Alpha mRNA expression (P=0.01), ER Beta mRNA expression (P=0.016), serum ER alpha protein level (P=0.008) and no significant association with serum ER betha levels (P=0.055). The greater the amount of parity, the greater the risk of pelvic organ prolapse. Chronic cough is a risk factor that affects the incidence of pelvic organ prolapse.
CONCLUSIONS: Age, parity and weightlifting history as a risk factors have a significant association with ER alpha mRNA expression, ER beta mRNA expression, serum alpha protein and serum beta protein.
