Short-term hypoxic training improves maximal anaerobic power after a week of recovery

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare improvements in performance after 7 days of twice daily hypoxic training with 2 or 9 days of recovery.
METHODS: Eight female 400- and 800-m track athletes volunteered to participate in the 7-day training regimen. The training consisted of high intensity interval training (five repetitions of 30 s of maximum speed pedalling) and endurance training (30 min of incremental running and 30 min of steady pedalling). Subjects trained in a normobaric hypoxia room (3000 m altitude). Subjects completed the maximal anaerobic running test, incremental running test and 10 s maximal pedalling test before (pre), 2 days after (post 1), and 9 days after (post 2) the training period.
RESULTS: The maximal anaerobic running test result at Post 2 was significantly higher compared with Pre (P<0.05). From the incremental running test, no significant differences were found in VO2max/kg. The time to exhaustion at Post 1 and Post 2 was significantly higher compared with Pre (P<0.05). The mean power during the 10-s maximal pedalling test was significantly lower at Post 1 than at Pre (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that overreaching short-term hypoxic training would be effective for performance enhancement of 400-m or 800-m competitive runners and the performance enhancement could be observed after approximately a week-long of rest period.
