BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to analyze the effects of combined exercise program on health and physical fitness factors according to a BglI restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) in the renin gene in middle aged obese women.
METHODS. A total of twenty-two middle aged women above 30% of %body fat (mean age 53.0±7.1 year) were registered in this study, and they all performed the combined exercise program including aerobic and resistance training during 16 weeks. A BglI RFLP in renin gene was genotyped by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) - 1% agarose gel electrophoresis method.
RESULTS: Among the parameters analyzed, there was the significant association between this genetic polymorphism and the baseline serum ALT activity (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONS: Although it is likely that a BglI RFLP in renin gene might be one of the genetic markers related to liver functions, further studies using larger sample size will be required to clarify the clinical implication of this genetic polymorphism.
